The Nest-Egg and the Funeral — Fear of Death on the Parish among the Elderly

  • Chapter
A Safer Death

Abstract

My interest in the nest-egg phenomenon has arisen from historical work on attitudes to death in modern Britain, on which I have been engaged for over a decade. This paper draws together observations made on ad hoc basis during the course of my work on related cultural phenomena. It is based mainly on data from the London area, verified by forays elsewhere and by comparing notes with others involved in oral/historical work in several other areas of Britain. I believe my work may have implications for caring practice.
