Abstract
On diagnosis, the cancer patient is presented immediately with a number of problems — the stigma, the following isolation, the possibility of terminal illness with cancer at some time, the possibility of severe pain, the need for treatment which may be traumatic, mutilating, nauseating or disabling in its side effects. With these may follow family disruption, financial repercussions with life style changes. Though all these may not impinge at once, the cancer patient knows on diagnosis that life will never be the same again.
