Abstract

Wide spread die-back and death of trees in the Federal Republic of Germany have been attributed to the deleterious effects of acid deposition. Similar damage is now occurring in eastern North America and possible mechanisms that could explain this serious development are discussed. Periodic warm dry years can augment the cumulative effect of many years of acid deposition on the leaching of calcium and magnesium from the soil. The symptoms of tree decline and death are consistent with an inadequate uptake of these essential nutrients and their chemical and physiological role in the growth and well-being of the tree.
