Abstract
The spirit of the previous chapter was completely behavioral. We have talked about states of the ecosystem, the transitions from state to state, and the general relations which must necessarily obtain between the statistical behavior of the biota and the statistical behavior of the environment. So far, however, we have said nothing at all about the nature of these states.
