Abstract

The “Ponts et Chaussées” department have experience of reusing 12 year-old concrete for partial reconstruction in 1976–77 of the three lane pavement of the A 1 northbound motorway. The middle and heavy truck lanes were demolished in 6 days representing about 65 000 m2. Fragmentation was undertaken in two machines where 5 ton masses exerted a guillotine action. The recycled plain concrete was used to rebuild the foundation of these same lanes (lean concrete 25 000 m3) and the emergency stopping lanes (porous concrete).
