Abstract

Adsorption-sensitive fracture and flow behavior has been known for over 100 years. Indeed, in his excellent review of this topic in the Tewksbury Lecture in 1974,1 Westwood pointed out that that year was the centennial of Reynold’s first discoveries on the embrittlement of iron by hydrogen,2 the fiftieth anniversary of Joffe’s famous publication on ductility enhancement of salt crystals by solvents,3 and the thirtieth anniversary of the publishing of “Hardness Reducers in Rock Drilling” by Rebinder and his colleagues.4 This field, in its entirety, is vast, including as it does, stress corrosion cracking of metals or ceramics by liquid or gaseous environments, corrosion fatigue, hydrogen embrittlement, polymer” crazing, Rebinder effects, complex ion embrittlement, and chemomechanical effects.
