Substance P and Sensory Transmitter

Abstract

Two papers that appeared in the 1930s had an important influence on later studies of sensory transmitters and they have particular relevance in the present chapter. Euler and Gaddum (1931), while studying the distribution of acetylcholine in different organs, found that the extracts of equine brain and intestine contain an unidentified vasodilator and smooth-muscle-contracting agent. This agent was later referred to as substance P (Chang and Gaddum, 1933; Gaddum and Schild, 1934) and was shown to be of peptide nature (Euler, 1936). For many years, however, the chemical structure of substance P as well as its physiological function remained unknown (see below).
