Abstract

This paper deals with the relationship between strength of adhesion and density of chemical bonding at the interface between an elastomer and a glass substrate. Reactive sites of varying surface density were obtained by treating glass plates with mixtures of vinyl and ethyl silanes in varying proportions. A layer of polybutadiene or poly(ethylene-co-propylene) containing dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was then pressed into contact with the treated glass surface and cross-linked in situ by heating to the decomposition temperature of DCP. Interfacial chemical bonding via vinyl groups (when present) in the silane-treated surface was assumed to occur simultaneously with the cross-linking reaction. Evidence for this was obtained from near-infrared spectroscopy of model systems, using finely-divided silica in place of glass.
