Abstract

In living animals, many types of cells are normally exposed to a variety of internal and external forces. Although it is well known that mechanical forces cause a variety of effects on the structure and function of the cells, little is known as to how mechanical stimuli are converted into intracellular signals of gene regulation (reviewed in Ingber, 1991; Vandenburgh, 1992).
