Abstract

During recent years considerable speculation has been forthcoming regarding the status of placental fetal stem arteries in hypertensive disorders (toxemia) of pregnancy. A number of investigators (Isidor and Aubry, 1957; Paine, 1957; Robecchi and Simone, 1965; Fox, 1967; Hoelzl et al., 1974; Las Heras, 1978; Las Heras et al., 1979; Las Heras et al., 1983) have shown that a narrowing of the lumen of those vessels, due to the proliferation and prominence of endothelial cells, the smooth muscle cells, and fibrous tissue of the media was a characteristic feature of placentae from patients with toxemia. The extent of the narrowing was assessed morphometrically by Las Heras et al. (1985) who showed that there was a significant reduction in the ratio of lumen-to-whole-diameter of the fetal stem arteries in toxemia as compared with a normal control group.
