Abstract

This chapter is essentially a continuation of the preceding chapter, and the introduction of that chapter serves also as an introduction to this chapter. As was stated there, the main topic of this chapter is the relationship of the geophysical signatures of the Nordic Seas to seafloor spreading (plate tectonics) and the igneous crust. Geophysical signatures discussed are earthquakes, past as well as recent volcanism, crustal and upper mantle structure determined by seismic reflection and refraction, time-varing electromagnetic fields and electrical resistivities, gravity anomalies, static magnetic-field anomalies, heat flow and hydrothermal processes, geochemistry, and hotspots. A related topic that ends this chapter’s discussion of geophysical signatures in relation to crustal makeup and motions is direct measurement of local motions on Iceland. The locations of vertical sections of crustal structures and profiles of geophysical signatures shown in this chapter and in chapter 10 are displayed in Fig. la. The locations of areas mapped in detail are displayed in Fig. lb.
