Abstract

Micropore polymer filters are produced by chemical etching of latent radiation damage trails created by incident energetic heavy ions. The trails, also called tracks, are developed as pores after etching and their parametric characteristics depend upon various factors viz., nature of polymer, irradiation ion-beam, et chant (usually aqueous alkaline solution) and etching temperature, pre-irradiation treatment of polymer and storage conditions, etc. In this report here we present the results on the effect of a liquid surfactant added to the main etdchant (6N NaOH, 45°C) on the pores parameters in 238U (14MeV/n) ions irradiated 60 um thick Makrofol (polycarbonate) foils, using electrolytically controlled etching. It is observed that the addition of surfactant tends to increase the radial etched-pore growth rate after a moderate etch time.
