Abstract

The surface properties of an acrylonitrile-butadiene-methacrylic acid latex as a function of NaCl and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) concentrations, and of pH were studied by Zeta potential measurements and by means of the ESR of two spin probes: the non-ionic C8-TEMP0 (4-octanoyloxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1-oxy) and the cationic Temp-TMA+ (4-trimethylammonium -2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1-oxy iodide). The variation of Zeta potential as a function of salt addition was demonstrated (from the ESR spectra analysis) to be due to ion adsorption at the latex surface and/or to a change in the interfacial water structure. On the other hand, the variation of the Zeta potential for pH > 9 was suggested to be due to the dissociation of the latex carboxyl groups. The addition of SDS strongly de creased at the latex hydrophobic chain contacts with the solvent.
