Abstract
Acid mine drainage results from the oxidation of pyritic materials exposed during the mining of coal deposits and is a major water pollution problem in the northeastern coalfields of India. The rate of pyrite oxidation is greatly accelerated by certain iron and sulphur oxidising, chemoautotrophic acidophilic bacteria, particularly Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Inhibition of these bacteria by the application of water soluble anionic surfactants can effectively reduce the acid formation.
