Polymerization of Urea-Formaldehyde in Microemulsions

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

The phase diagrams of microemulsions containing AOT, toluene and formaldehyde or the water soluble urea-formaldehyde resin solution were investigated. The addition of formaldehyde or water soluble urea-formaldehyde resin solution markedly increased the solubility of AOT-H20-toluene to form a large region of water-in-oil, oil-in-water and bicontinuous microemulsions. The effect was attributed to the presence of glycols and/or methylol compounds which might act as cosurfactants in forming these microemulsions.
