Surfactant Properties of Castor Fatty Acid Derivatives

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

The synthesis and solution properties of acyl isethionates of fatty acids of different chain length and unsaturation and with mid-chain polarity have been investigated. A method involving the direct alcoholysis of castor oil or its methyl ester has been developed for the preparation of castor acyl isethionate. The solution properties of the acyl isethionates have been compared with those of 12 sulphoacetyloxy derivatives of C18 fatty acids reported earlier.
