Abstract

Ultra-high harmonic generation is a field currently attracting considerable theoretical and experimental interest. The generation of harmonics of orders well in excess of 100 from noble gas targets has recently been demonstrated by a number of groups1,2,3 using ultra-high intensity pump lasers. Typically only the odd harmonics are observed (due to parity considerations) and the harmonic spectrum is characterised by an initial decline in intensity with increasing harmonic order, followed by a plateau region which may include many harmonics of similar brightness, and finally a sharp cut-off, beyond which no further harmonic emission is seen.
