Abstract
An intense laser system is a necessary prerequisite for experimental investigation of super-intense laser/atom physics. The highest laser intensities are realized by producing a large amount of laser energy in a short pulse. The amount of energy which can be produced by a laser system is limited by its physical size. However, the length of the laser pulse has only one physical constraint: the duration of the pulse cannot be significantly shorter than a single “optical-cycle”. This limit has yet to be realized for visible radiation, where the shortest pulses used in intense laser systems are at least tens of cycles long.
