Abstract
Resonances can play an important role in multiphoton ionisation (MPI). Especially at low and moderate intensities the presence of a resonance tends to increase the ionisation rate by many orders of magnitude. Such Resonance Enhanced MPI (REMPI) has evolved into a very useful technique for (state-selective) detection of trace atoms and molecules. For a long time it was thought that at high intensities (above 1013W/cm2) resonances were unimportant for the MPI process. This belief was based on the assumption that in this intensity range the ionization lifetime of excited states was so short that the corresponding level broadening would wipe out the resonance structure. Experiments seemed to confirm this view, since the ionisation yield did not show sharp structure as a function of wavelength.
