Abstract

Above threshold ionization (ATI) has until recently been observed mostly in the rare gases1–4 with the exception of one experiment and related theory on hydrogen5. A recent experiment6 on Cs using extremely short (around 80 fs) pulses at around 600 nm and intensities as high as 1014 W/cm2 demonstrated the possibility of observing extensive ATI structure even though the atom can ionize with the absorption of two photons. The reason is that the extremely short pulse duration allows the atom to experience intensity sufficiently high for ATI to develop before saturation (complete ionization) by the lowest order process.
