The CYBER 205

The Control Data Corporation CYBER 205 is a direct descendant of the STAR-100. Many improvements, most notably the inclusion of a scalar processor, evolved from experience with the STAR-100. Scalar computations on the STAR-100 were inefficient due to the long latency of the vector pipelines. A series of scalar floating-point additions was ten times slower than the same number of additions performed in vector mode. On the CYBER-205, register operations involving scalars need not use the pipelines. These computations are performed by the set of independent function units within the scalar processor.
