Biology of the Collateral Circulation

  • Chapter
Structure and Function of the Circulation

Abstract

Collateral vascular channels are those arteries and veins which are interposed as connecting links capable of bypassing areas of vascular occlusion. Their basic function is to carry blood in sufficient quantities to maintain the circulatory equilibrium of the part they serve. In the arterial system, most diseases which lead to the development of collateral circulation interfere with delivery of blood to the tissues, often resulting in either acute or chronic ischemia. The extent to which the collateral arteries can assume the role of the parent, diseased artery is dependent upon many factors which include the location of the obstruction, the rapidity with which the occlusion occurs, the size and distribution of the preformed collateral channels, and the metabolic requirements of the organ system.
