The Innervation of Arteries

  • Chapter

Abstract

Knowledge of the innervation of arteries was limited for many years to light microscopic examination of silver and methylene blue stained preparations (Hillarp, 1959; Grigor’eva, 1962). These methods cannot distinguish between different autonomic nerve types or reveal the relationship of individual nerve fibers to smooth muscle cells. There are still many gaps in our knowledge of the pattern, density, and mechanism of innervation of the wide variety of arteries that are present in the vascular system, but considerable advances have been made in this field in the past decade following the application of histochemical and electron-microscopical methods (see reviews Ehinger et al., 1967; Somlyo and Somlyo, 1968; Holman, 1969; Burnstock, 1970, 1974, 1975a, 1975d, 1978; Burnstock et al., 1970; Speden, 1970; Bell and Burnstock, 1971; Bevan et al., 1972; Bevan and Su, 1973, 1974; Bukinich, 1973; Hudlická, 1973; Rosenblueth, 1976; Su and Lee, 1976; Hung and Loosli, 1977).

Much of the work reported in this article was carried out while the authors were working in the Department of Zoology, University of Melbourne, where it was supported by grants from the National Heart Foundation of Australia, Life Insurance Medical Research Fund of Australia and New Zealand, and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.
