Abstract

The major form of somatostatin (SS) is a 14 amino acid peptide (SS-14, SRIF) that inhibits the secretion of other peptide hormones including growth hormone, insulin and glucagon. It is synthesized in several tissues including brain, hypothalamus and pancreatic islets and its amino acid sequence is highly conserved in most species (1). Biosynthetic studies (2, 3) have demonstrated the existence of another somatostatin, SS-28, which is the SS-14 containing an additional 14 amino acids localized at the amino terminus; this peptide has also been isolated directly from several tissues (4–7). It is now well established that SS-14 is synthesized as part of a larger precursor, preprosomatostatin (prepro-SS), which is about eight times larger than the mature hormone (8).
