Electrolyte Effect on Micellization

  • Chapter
Solution Chemistry of Surfactants

Abstract

The ability of simple electrolytes to lower the critical micelle concentration and to alter the size and shape of micelles in aqueous surfactant solutions has been known for many years. Nevertheless, investigators continue to find aspects of these effects interesting and important enough to study. Debate continues over alkyl chain length, location of the core-water interface, the shape of micelles too large to be spherical, the relative importance of the hydrophobic and electrical forces in determining micelle shape, and the extent of water penetration in the micellar core. Our knowledge and understanding of counterion binding and specificity, the distribution of polar heads and counterions in the electrical double layer, the extent of polydispersity, and the effects of polar head structure and charge location on micelle size and dye solubilization efficiency continues to grow.
