Abstract
Gangliosides constitute a group of glycosylceramides which contain one or more N-acylneuraminic acid residues (5-acetamido- or 5-glycolamido-3, 5-dideoxy-D-glycero-d-galacto-nonulosonic acids). They were originally isolated by Ernst Klenk in 1939 from cerebral gray matter of the brain as a mixture of different species (Klenk, 1939, 1942). In the past 10 years the resolution, structural chemistry, and metabolism of gangliosides have been intensively studied and have been comprehensively reviewed by a number of authors (Svennerholm, 1964, 1970; Ledeen, 1966, 1970; McCluer, 1968; Roseman, 1968; Wiegandt, 1966, 1971).
