Abstract
In terms of mortality and morbidity and social and financial costs, alcohol abuse is clearly a major medical problem in our society today (e.g., Popham et al., 1984). There are considerable methodological problems in studying alcohol treatnent efficacy, but at least some observers have concluded that the overall efficacy of treatment for alcoholism is not great (see Smith, 1981).
One of the great weaknesses of the discipline that concerns itself with problems of substanre abuse is that there is a strong tendency to ignore both the cross-cultural experience and the historical data that are available (Bourne, 1982, p. xvii).
