Abstract

“Alcohol dependence” is an indefinitive term despite its widespread use. Formerly, alcohol dependence was recognized mainly by physical findings, with delirium tremens a crude indication, and liver disease a little better (Gayford, 1976). In recent years, however, alcohol dependence began to be diagnosed on the basis of not only physical disorders, but also psychological and social disorders (Eddy et al., 1965). Thus, whereas in the past, alcoholism was rarely associated with youth because it was assumed that physical damage required from 15 to 20 years of constant drinking (Gayford, 1976), recently, young persons have been labeled “alcoholics” (e.g., Faigel, 1975) because of their social or psychological problems related to alcohol.
