Nature and Development of Alcoholism in Women

  • Chapter
Alcohol and Drug Problems in Women

Part of the book series: Research Advances in Alcohol and Drug Problems ((AADP,volume 5))

Abstract

Up until the past decade, there has been a paucity of studies on alcoholism in women. Recently, a growing body of literature on this topic has emanated from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds. In this chapter, an attempt is made to summarize the important findings to date. Familial factors, environmental influences, development of drinking patterns, and more theoretical considerations of personality and psychopathology are described. The final section reports the emerging recognition of a relationship between alcoholism and affective disorders in women.
