Alcohol and Drug Problems in Women

Abstract

The literature on the etiology and natural history of alcoholism and drug addiction in women is limited. Longitudinal studies are particularly useful for addressing these questions, but the majority of longitudinal studies of alcohol and drug use are confined to males (McCord and McCord, 1960; Robins et al., 1974, 1975; Vaillant, 1973; Glueck and Glueck, 1968). Women are typically scarce in drug and alcohol treatment populations. When treatment samples are followed up, the few women may be dropped prior to follow-up or may be followed but not analyzed separately because of their small numbers. Follow-ups of general population samples are also usually restricted to men because of the large samples that would be required to identify enough female alcoholics or drug addicts to make their study worthwhile. Where follow-up studies of women exist, information is often restricted to use of alcohol and drugs rather than addiction or problem use, both because of the scarcity of women with substance abuse problems and because many of the available studies are restricted to adolescents, who have not had time to develop problems. The relative lack of longitudinal studies of women’s drug and alcohol abuse and the small samples of women heavily involved with drugs or alcohol in the few existing studies mean that we know even less about both the causes of women’s substance abuse and its natural history than we do about men’s.
