Alcoholism in Women Treatment Modalities and Outcomes

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Research Advances in Alcohol and Drug Problems ((AADP,volume 5))

Abstract

The literature on the treatment of the female alcoholic is dominated by rhetoric, hypothesis, and speculation supplemented by the occasional clinical observation and descriptive case history. Numerous concerned professionals have commented on the dearth of serious empirical investigation devoted to the area (Lisansky, 1958; Hirsh, 1962; Curlee, 1967; Lindbeck, 1972; Corrigan, 1974; Gomberg, 1974; Birchmore and Walderman, 1975; Litman, 1975; Beckman, 1976; Carver, 1977). Lindbeck (1972) summarized the situation by noting that the female alcoholic has been a stepchild in the field of research. It has begun to be acknowledged that this lack of scientific knowledge about the treatment of the female alcoholic constitutes a serious blind spot in the field of alcohol studies.
