Abstract
Any innovative prevention model predictably raises concerns and questions about how the model applies to particular situations, substances, or groups. In this chapter, we provide an overview of six special issues that often arise in implementing the Lifestyle Risk Reduction Model. People who have been working from a zero-tolerance perspective for youth have understandable questions about teaching lifetime low-risk guidelines to people under age 21. They also may wonder how Lifestyle Risk Reduction differs from “responsible drinking” and “harm reduction” approaches. Others have questions about how Lifestyle Risk Reduction addresses illicit drugs and the challenges of cultural diversity. This chapter addresses these issues, as well as several others that are important for Lifestyle Risk Reduction programs.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
