Abstract

Tribology is about the friction, lubrication and wear of contacting solids in relative motion. The paper reviews these three topics in very general terms. The emphasis is upon the inherent subjectivity which has arisen when very complex processes are simplified in order to render them amenable to description in qualitative and quantitative terms. Tribology has been described as an art; in many respects it is, although we strive to transform the total subject into a science.
