Abstract
The displacements of the center of foot pressure which are also called stabilograms, are a reliable measure of postural sway. In accordance with theoretical considerations by Gurfinkel (1973) and experimental studies by Nashner (1971), biomechanical and functional components are assumed to be reflected in the stabilograms. Our experiments aimed at elucidating mechanisms of postural regulation under normal or unusual sensory cues and with different internal levels of conscious control. Earlier investigations (Bräuer and Seidel, 1981) have revealed that stabilograms can well be characterized by autoregressive time series models. In order to analyze postural sway, the decomposition of stabilograms into different components and their parametric characterization appear to be a very promising approach. Another task of our studies was to examine if the decomposition of autoregressive models of higher order into models of the second and the first order can be applied.
