Magnetic Monopoles

Part of the book series: NATO Advanced Science Institutes Series ((NSSB,volume 102))

Abstract

Searches for magnetic monopoles of the order of a few GeV in mass are well documented by Carrigan,1 Carrigan et al.,2 Craven et al.,3 and are reviewed by Longo.4 I will limit this paper to reviewing current and future searches for massive magnetic monopoles of the ’t Hooft5-Polyakov6 type with e/2α as the magnetic charge, an idea originated by Dirac.7

  26. It should be noted that the energy deposited in the detector by a monopole is distribued over a time period equal to the time it takes the monopole to traverse the detector. In the case where the response time of the detector is short compared to its transit time, the detector sensitivity is decreased by the ratio of the response time over the transit time. This decrease in sensitivity can be recovered with the aid of an integrating amplifier whose integration time is adjusted to be that of the transit time.
