Chemical Aging

Abstract

Aging of a polymer is the undesirable change of its chemical and physical structure during application, i.e., mostly under atmospheric conditions. Chemical changes occur during both processing and application. Processing is usually carried out at elevated temperatures where thermal and oxidative reactions may become important. Photochemical and oxidative degradation reactions occur during use in the presence of air and light. Oxidation leads to a hardening and discoloring of the material and to surface changes. Plastics for medical purposes must be stable toward disinfectants; for example, toward salicylic acid. In this section only chemical aging will be discussed. The migration of plasticizers (see Section 10.5.6) can be considered as a special case of physicochemical aging. Physical aging processes are, for example, recrystallization and the relief of internal stress (Section 10.3).
