Laser-Stimulated Ionization and Desorption of Molecules in an Electric Field

  • Chapter
Laser Optics of Condensed Matter

Abstract

The field ionization and field desorption of atoms in electric fields of the order of 108 V/cm were first observed by Muller.1,2 Based on these phenomena, the field-on microscopy technique was developed allowing single atoms of a metal surface to be observed with a resolution of around 2Å.3
