Modeling of X-Ray Emission Created by Short Wavelength Laser Target Interaction

  • Chapter
Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena

Abstract

Laser created soft X-ray sources are very important in laser fusion but have also a variety of other uses. X-ray radiation produced in laser-matter interaction has indeed very interesting characteristics. The X-ray spectrum comes from highly stripped ions; it is predominantly XUV or soft X-ray line radiation of K, L, M, N type as well as continuum in the keV range; its properties can be adjusted by a convenient choice of target atomic number and irradiation conditions. The X-ray energy delivered in the total spectrum can reach half the incident laser energy. The X-ray pulse duration is short: 0.1–20 nanoseconds. The dimensions of the source are small. Depending on the laser used, X-ray radiation can be available with high peak power or high average power. These flexible characteristics are interesting for a large number of applications.
