Abstract

Iron circulating in the plasma is bound to transferrin. Most of this iron originates from the breakdown of effete red cells in the reticuloendothelial system (RES) and it is transported to the bone marrow for new hemoglobin synthesis. A smaller proportion of iron enters the transport pool from the gastrointestinal tract, from storage iron, and from catabolism of tissue hemins.
