Abstract
At the turn of the twentieth century, Ehrlich contrasted the ease of inducing antibodies to foreign cells. Ehrlich and Morgenroth (1900) showed that serum from goats immunized with blood from other goats would lyse erythrocytes from those goats but not autologous erythrocytes. These authors concluded, “the organism has contrivances by which the immunity reaction ... is prevented from reacting against the organism’s own elements.” Thus the genesis of the concept of “horror autotoxicus.”
