Prostaglandins and Other Arachidonate Metabolites

Immunodermatology

Part of the book series: Comprehensive Immunology ((COMIMUN,volume 7))

Abstract

Tissue injury in many skin diseases is a result of immunological reactions and inflammation. The prostaglandins and their associated compounds are important in the regulation of these host responses and probably influence epidermal cell function. In this chapter we describe the biochemistry and structure of the prostaglandins and the newly discovered compounds within the metabolic pathways between essential fatty acids, the primary prostaglandins, and the nonprostanoate products. The influence of prostaglandins in initiation and regulation of immune/inflammatory processes is reviewed. The possible role of these compounds in cutaneous pathophysiology is discussed.
