Some Central Connections of Medullary Octavolateral Centers in a Mormyrid Fish

Abstract

Mormyrid fish have a small gas bladder on each side of the head which abuts the sacculus. As von Frisch (1938) and Stipetic (1939) indicated, the gasbladder probably functions as a pressure to displacement transducer, allowing the fish to sense sound pressure waves. The close apposition to the gasbladder thus implies a hearing role for the sacculus inmormyrids. For most fish, behavioral studies also indicate a role in hearing for the sacculus, and in equilibrium for the utriculus and canals (Popper and Fay 1973).
