Part of the book series: Principles of Pediatric Neurosurgery ((PRINCPEDIATR))

Abstract

Birth trauma has been defined55 as any condition that adversely affects the fetus during labor or delivery. Here, however, only the mechanical factors affecting the fetus during labor and delivery will be addressed. Although the obstetrician must cope with primary birth injuries, the actual problems of birth injuries should be considered the combined concern of both the obstetrician and the pediatrician. Infants who have sustained serious injury may experience permanent sequelae that, in turn, may be of concern to the pediatric neurologist, physiotherapist, psychologist, orthopedist, pediatric surgeon and neurosurgeon. The possibility of birth injury must be considered in the case of an obscure death of an infant during or shortly after delivery; medico-legal problems may then arise and need resolution.
