Abstract

The clinical neurological assessment of a newborn should begin with a history: parental and obstetric, as well as a detailed history of the infant’s intrapartum and neonatal course. Important factors in the obstetric history, which should include complete information regarding the pregnancy, are the age of the mother and her medical background, prior pregnancies, and familial neurological disorders. Important factors in the history of the neonatal course are feeding, sucking, and crying patterns. Questions should be asked about seizures, cyanotic spells, apneic spells, infection, jaundice, and muscle tone.
