Abstract
The study of anesthetic action is an extremely broad field of endeavor, especially if one defines anesthesia as the reversible inhibition of many sorts of physiological parameters. To the experimentalist, the field offers the possibility of studying the action of chemically inert compounds in controlling insects, killing weeds, or depressing the function of the higher centers of the central nervous system. To the theoretician, the field presents a relatively compact and firmly established body of data in need of explanation.
