Cytoplasmic Messenger RNA

Handbook of Genetics

Abstract

The term messenger RNA (mRNA) was first used by Jacob and Monod (1961) in their interpretation of experiments concerning the synthesis of RNA after phage infection and the kinetics of enzyme induction and repression. Their brilliant ideas rapidly found wide acceptance, and studies of cell-free protein synthesis under direction of synthetic and viral mRNAs followed (Singer and Leder, 1966), as well as investigations on cellular messenger RNA (Brammar, 1969). At present, it is well established that in eukaryotes mRNA is also the intermediate carrier of information from DNA to protein. In this connection, it must be kept in mind that a number of oligopeptides can be synthesized in vivo without mRNA and the ribosomal machinery (cf. Lipmann, 1973).
