Abstract
In this survey I concentrate attention on the topic with which I am most familar, namely the growth of crystals of oxides whose melting points lie above 1000°C. Further, I will refer in the main to advances made in the USA. This does not mean that research data from other countries appear to me to be unimportant or of little significance, but rather that I would like to restrict consideration to a few researches with which I am thoroughly familar while taking the risk of neglecting the results from more important studies.
