Genetics and Molecular Biology of Anaerobic Bacteria

Part of the book series: Brock/Springer Series in Contemporary Bioscience ((BROCK/SPRINGER))

Abstract

The thermophilic gram-positive anaerobe Clostridium thermocellum produces a highly active cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic enzyme complex (Ng et al., 1977; Garcia-Martinez et al., 1980; Johnson et al., 1982; Johnson and Demain, 1984). This complex, termed the cellulo-some (Lamed et al., 1983a, 1983b), is located on the surface of the bacteria during growth and mediates their adherence to the substrate. It is released into the medium when growth ends.
