Abstract
The bioconversion of plant raw materials into refined chemicals has become a stimulating field of biotechnology. The expanding studies on Clostridium acetobutylicum, a gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that produces solvents such as acetone, butanol, and ethanol from carbohydrates, illustrate this interest (Zeikus, 1980; Blaschek, 1986; Jones and Woods, 1986a; McNeil and Kristiansen, 1986; Rogers, 1986; Bahl and Gottschalk, 1988; Young et al., 1989).
