Abstract
Our task in this workshop is to see how developments in homogeneous catalysis might be applied towards the solution of energy-related problems in the chemical industry. Energy savings could berealized by the use of less costly feedstocks and by the employment of more direct, simple and efficient chemical processes. This talk reviews some recent developments in the catalytic chemistry of olefins and suggests desirable novel chemistry that would, if realized, bring inportant saving in energy or feedstocks. In order to put this discussion in a realistic economic perspective, we will first discuss the present and future sources, availability, and economics, of the three major olefins: ethylene, propylene and butadiene.
